Many suspicious pulmonary nodules discovered inadvertently or as part of ongoing computed tomography (CT) screening programs once required open surgery for evaluation. Increasingly, minimally invasive strategies being pursued at the Hospital allow sufficient tissue to be acquired to confirm the diagnosis, provide information about the cancer stage, and identify molecular characteristics that may be relevant to choice of treatment. Minimally invasive strategies are complementary to CT screening programs that have been initiated to identify lung cancers at an early stage in high-risk patients. Although studies suggest lung cancer deaths can be reduced by at least 20% with screening, “the majority of nodules found on CT scans are benign,” explained Nasser Altorki, MB, BCh, Chief of Thoracic Surgery, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Altorki added, “The trick is to avoid invasive procedures or surgery in patients who do not have cancers. New minimally invasive techniques to obtain tissue samples significantly enhance our ability to improve early diagnosis.”

Analysis of the Results of Pulmonary Resection by Minimally Invasive Thoracoscopy for the Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer

Introduction: Lung cancer is the disease of modern era, and the rate of lung cancer mortality is three times as high as that for prostate cancer and twice as high as the rate for breast cancer. We aimed to analyze the results of pulmonary resection in patients with NSCLC by minimally invasive thoracoscopy.  Materials and Methods: We studied 10 patients with NSCLC scheduled for surgical resectio...

Comparison the Outcomes of Open Thoracotomy and Minimally Invasive Thoracoscopic Esophagectomy in Esophageal Cancer

Introduction: Surgery is the first therapeutic option for esophageal cancer. There is controversy over the selection of the best surgical approach. Regarding this, the present study aimed to compare the minimally invasive and open esophagectomy in terms of their short-term outcomes and preoperative complications. Materials & Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 61 patients i...

Ramadan fasting: Do we need more evidence?

Over a billion of Muslims fast worldwide during Ramadan each year. Through this religious custom, fasting contributes to their health as well as their spiritual growth. However, available evidence regarding the health-benefits of Ramadan fasting is scarce and highly contentious. Although Islam exempts patients from fasting, many fast conceivably, and their clinical condition is prone to deterio...

Non-Invasive Breast Cancer Diagnosis through Electrochemical Biosensing at Different Molecular Levels

The rapid and accurate determination of specific circulating biomarkers at different molecular levels with non- or minimally invasive methods constitutes a major challenge to improve the breast cancer outcomes and life quality of patients. In this field, electrochemical biosensors have demonstrated to be promising alternatives against more complex conventional strategies to perform fast, accura...
